Ukic Impresses In Beijing

By Ryan McNeill • on August 19, 2008

Earlier this this summer as it became clear that Roko-Leni Ukic would be Jose Calderon’s backup next season an uncomfortable level of doubt and concern crept into Raptors Nation. After enjoying a highly successful point guard tandem the past two seasons, it’s understandable fans would be hesitent to embrace a situation where the team would rely heavily on a starter who yet to be a starter for an entire season while having a backup who has yet to play a single game in the NBA.

If Ukic’s play in Beijing is any indication, those concerns will be short lived.

The Sportings News Today ran a feature today called “These Four Shouldn’t Get Lose In Shuffle For Gold” where they name Ukic as one of the four players who stood out in the tournament. Sean Deveney wrote in article:

Ukic is not shooting well (33.3%), but most important for Croatia is his ability to push the tempo. Ukic, who will be a reserve point guard in Toronto next season, is a deft ballhandler who leads Croatia - a developing young team worth keeping an eye on - with 3.4 assists per game.

A deft ballhandler that can push the tempo? Sounds like the perfect compliment to Calderon, much like Ford was before issues over playing time complicated that relationship.
