Buzzer Beaters - 04/20

By Ryan McNeill • on April 20, 2008

* A nice surprise this week was to see former NBA head coach Eric Musselman add Hoops Addict as one of his 20 hoop links on his official blog.

* Adrian Wojnarowski wrote a great article on the fractured relationship between Byron Scott and Jason Kidd. He summarized how Kidd led a revolt in New Jersey to get his former coach canned and the article looks at how Scott refused to get into the mudslinging. Do you think there’s any added incentive for Scott to oust Kidd and the Mavericks from the playoffs? I sure do.

* D.K. Wilson, the extremely talented writer whose work has played a major role here on Hoops Addict, has launched a new version of Sports On My Mind, it’s a site all sports fans should bookmark and add to their RSS Readers. In addition to his own talents, Wilson has recruited a roster full of writers to round out his “dream team”.

* Near the end of the season Raptors fans were whipped into a fury when a last second tip-in by T.J. Ford was waived off because the referees felt there wasn’t enough time on the clock. While the Raptors front office elected not to appeal to the NBA about the call, Raptors forward Jason Kapono hit YouTube and created a video which shows a player can clearly get off a shot in under 2 seconds. Ahh, the genius of YouTube…

* Speaking of YouTube clips, I’m a huge Tim Duncan fan but this video clip of him drinking some sour Gatorade was priceless.

* Scoop Jackson did a solid job of breaking down the Raptors talented duo at point guard but I thought Dough Smith’s article on Calderon was even better. How is Bryan Colangelo going to afford Calderon this summer? As great as Ford is, I think the loss of Calderon would set the franchise back quite a bit in their pursuit of being legit contenders

* You’ve got to feel for Sonics fans in Seattle as it looks like the team is about to be moved to Oklahoma City.

* I know I’m a day late to help you fill out your playoff brackets, but What If Sports did an amazing job of breaking down the playoffs by running 10,000 simulations. Yes, you read that correctly. They somehow found the time to run 10,000 simulations on how the NBA Playoffs could unfold. According to their article they correctly predicted every game of the Sweet 16, Elite Eight, Final Four and Championship of the NCAA tournament so it’s clear whatever formula they are using works. According to their timulations, Utah has the greatest chance to will in it all (21.2%) while Boston has the second highest chance (12.8%) and Phoenix is third (10.8%).

* March Madness media darling Stephen Curry recently went on Conan O’Brien and told the host he wants facial hair and an education.

* Rod Benson wrote a great article on Ball Don’t Lie about what it was like to see himself in Slam Magazine for the first time.

* The Knicks rewarded fans who attended the final game of the season with free food.

* Kansas State freshman sensation Michael Beasley formally declared for the NBA Draft. The only question remaining is whether Beasley or Derrick Rose will go #1 overall.

* I was honoured to take part in Hardwood Paroxysm’s Playoff Preview by covering the Toronto Raptors. Although, I have to admit I’m a little disappointed to see Matt’s picking Orlando to win the series in six games.

New Music for your iPod:

* Blu has a great track out called Glory Us that’s a must for any hip hop fan to download.

* I’m a huge fan of Erykah Badu and normally I loathe remixes of R&B singers because I feel it takes away from the original. This isn’t the case with the latest remix for Honey. Make sure you check this gem out.

* This isn’t an MP3 for you to download, but you need to check out the YouTube clip of The Roots on Stephen Colbert this week performing The Star Spangled Banner.

* If you like hip hop fusions check out a new group called Nomack who is a fusion between hip hop and jazz.

* Another “chill” artist to check out is Janelle Monae and her new song Sincerely Jane.

* Do you need yet another reason to vote for Barack Obama? Then check out this video of him telling people to dust the brush off his shoulder a la Jay Z. Genius.

* There wasn’t a lot of new music that caught my attention this week so for my final pick I’m going to hype up the new Angelina Jolie movie Wanted.
