Inside Enemy Territory with “Crazy from the Heat”
A huge thank you goes out to Vivek from Crazy From The Heat for taking part in this version of Inside Enemy Territory. He took part in this column two weeks ago when Toronto and Miami met up, and despite having computer problems he still managed to answer my questions. I gained a lot of respect for Vivek after he wrote to me last night, “I don’t go in the office until 11am tomorrow so I burned some midnight oil (and my cousins electric bill), in an effort to get this done for you. No worries though. Take care, and anytime you need this, count me in.”
I have the utmost respect for Vivek who stepped up huge in getting these questions answered for Raptors fans.
1. Daequan Cook and Canadian Joel Anthony were playing in the NDBL earlier this month but both players were recalled when Dwyane Wade was shut down for the season. What kind of minutes will either player earn during the last few games of the season?
Daequan Cook I expect to see a good number of minutes in the rotation. Quietly, he’s one of the players that Pat Riley and the Heat team members are very high on. Earlier in the season many locals drew comparisons of him to a young Dwyane Wade - not in the sense of athletic ability, but in the sense of his ability to play with ‘ice veins’ in some very key moments of big games. It’s my understanding that Riley sent him to the NBDL for the sole purpose of getting him minutes to get back into a rhythm since he had apparently gone cold from the field in what we know as the ‘rookie wall.’ His first game in the NBDL he put up 26 points and has since returned to the team and shown great continuity so I expect him to be a key member of the remaining rotation.
As far as Joel Anthony goes, I think he’ll get some decent minutes because he’s a quality backup. I think Riley wants to take a good look at him to consider what options he should pursue - or not pursue - in the offseason.
2. Dorrell Wright has a ton of potential but he hasn’t been able to stay healthy. Should Miami resign him this summer?
I think Pat Riley understands that there’s still a certain maturation going on with Dorrell Wright. Mentally and physically. Early in the career of Wade there were various media personalities to come down on him for not playing with injuries and being injury prone as well. The only difference is that Riley understands Wade had the maturation process of how to deal with that adversity and play through some of it instilled in him from the collegiate level that Wright didn’t have coming to the team directly from high school. Those close to the Heat camp know the true value of Wright, and Wade has openly acknowledged the fact that Wright is technically more athletic than Wade himself, so there’s no question about the potential, the true question is when will it kick in? Based on his development after a much protested stint in the NBDL, I think Riley gives him a chance - even if it is in the form of a short term contract - to gel with a revamped roster next year that could boast athleticism in the form of Wade, Marion, Wright, and a possible young stud like Beasley. I do expect Wright to be resigned, but let’s not get it twisted, if the right veteran comes along in a draft night trade, all of a sudden, the future of Dorrell Wright and a few other guys on the roster makes for a plot that suddenly thickens in Miami.
3. Will Pat Riley be sitting courtside at the USC/Kansas State game this weekend or will he be sitting on the sideline coaching Miami?
The official word isn’t out as of yet, but you can bet your bottom dollar Pat’ll be on the first plane smoking to sit courtside at that game. It showcases the two main components believed to be in his radar and barring any outlandish occurrence, Riley wouldn’t miss this for the world.
4. With a top pick in the draft who are some players you’d like Miami to draft?
Either Michael Beasley or Derrick Rose. Beasley I think fits the mold of what the team needs in unison with Dwyane Wade, but Rose has more of the defensive disposition that Riley looks for and that could be a point of contention if the Miami Heat does actually land the highly coveted number one spot.
5. NBA.com is letting fans vote on their favourite Dance Teams. Toronto could face Miami in the second round, would our Dance Team have any chance of beating yours?
Hate to be biased but the answer to that question is negative. Absolutely no chance they beat our dancers. Just to let the readers in on some quick team history, legend has it that the Miami Heat had a few other logos and names to choose from until they put the dance team together and quickly realized they had to go with the name “Heat” since they were all so HOT!!! (Smiles). Ok, I know we’re talking dancers, not models, but I think we have them beat in that department too. Guess we’ll soon see, but remember where you heard it first!
Again, a big thanks goes out to Vivek for sending me these answers despite some issues with his computer. Make sure you check out Crazy From The Heat for a game preview and recap for tonight’s game.
