Buzzer Beaters
This week Buzzer Beaters includes a quote from Terry Porter about what it was like to coach T.J. Ford, a link to Baron Davis rollerskating and pictures of the kicks PONY is producing to help market Semi-Pro.
* My favourite YouTube clip this week was of Baron Davis on rollerskates. It’s part of the RBK Framed series where actors are given a camera and a chance to film a short documentary with a famous athlete. Besides this being a hilarious video of B Dizzle, I also liked this clip because it was directed by Emmanuelle Chrique, the hottie from Entourage.
* Like Tobias, I grew up owning a lot of Air Jordan kicks so I was intrigued about his recent article talking about the Air Jordan shoes being sold in Europe. I’m far from a huge shoe guy, but this was the kind of post that brought me back to high school as the Jordan XI shoes he talked about were the same ones a buddy wore one season.
* Sticking with Ball In Europe a little longer, I was amused with his post on Team of Heroes which is Nike’s attempt to market Euro League stars.
* Going back to shoes, Brian McCormick posted a picture of the shoes PONY produced to help promote Will Ferrell’s new movie Semi-Pro.
* Earlier this week Slam reported that Karl Malone could return to the hardwood and by the next day the Salt Lake Tribune had squashed that rumour. Back when I was in high school Utah was my team, but I have to admit I’m happy to hear Malone won’t be attempting an ill-fated comeback that would only tarnish his legacy. I remember watching Magic Johnson at the SkyDome during his final comeback and that season diminished his legacy in my mind. I’d hate for that to have happened to Malone.
* I was intrigued this week when Wilbon and Kornheiser gave Greg Oden props for talking about his political beliefs, in specific his backing of Barack Obama, to the media. While I feel it’s great Oden is following politics - not too many people his age follow politics closely, I know I don’t - I don’t know how wise it is for an athlete to be connected to a certain candidate or political party. Call me a hypocrite, because I’m someone who complains athletes throw out too many cliches when dealing with the media, but I don’t feel this will help Oden when it comes time to sign endorsement deals with Nike, Ford or McDonalds.
* Speaking of athletes and politics, Kevin Johnson is running for mayor of Sacramento.
* A lot of basketball sites have power rankings, but a nice twist on this is the Powerless Rankings that Hardwood Paroxysm runs each week. And yes, I had to check a dictionary to find out what a paroxysm is.
* Here’s another blast from the past - a post about MacGyver.
* Who is your MVP of the NBA this season? This week Hoops Addict’s own Gagan sounded off, Kelly Dwyer broke down why Kobe Bryant is not the MVP this season, and Section F Sports added his thoughts into the discussion earlier in the week only to change his mind a couple days later.
* Henry over at True Hoop did a great job of his interview with Pistons assistant coach Terry Porter. My favourite part of the interview was when Henry asked Porter about coaching T.J Ford and he responded by saying: ” I love T.J. Loved him from the first day we sat down and talked about playing that point guard position. I just think he’s a winner. A lot of people think that he’s too small and he’s not big enough and he doesn’t have the shots or whatever. But I think when you look at someone, obviously you need to look at the whole picture and he’s always been a winner at every level and for me in Milwaukee, he was great for us. I know when we had success, a lot of it had to do with his ability to run the team for us and create opportunities for our team. I’m a big fan of T.J. Ford, and was sad to see him get the setback this year against Atlanta, but since then, he has come back slowly and he’s starting to play again. I just hope the young man is blessed to play a long career, because I think he’s great for the league and he has the skill that’s needed in this league.” If you’re a Raptors fan make sure you click on the link above because Porter answers a question about whether Ford should continue playing or if he should retire.
* What would the NBA have done if Gerald Green had won the Slam Dunk contest this year? I don’t think it would have been good for the NBA’s image to have a back-to-back Slam Dunk champion released a couple weeks after the competition.
