Jason Kidd traded to Dallas
UPDATE: Marc Stein at ESPN is saying that Devean George is going to exercise his right to veto any trade involving him. Unbelievable! We’ll see if he can be persuaded, or if something can be worked out without George. Stay tuned!
According to multiple sources, including Marc Stein of ESPN and Tony Meija at CBS Sportsline, Jason Kidd’s long-rumoured trade to the Dallas Mavericks is finally done. According to sources, the trade breaks down like so: Dallas gets Kidd and Malik Allen, while New Jersey gets Devin Harris, Jerry Stackhouse, DeSagana Diop, Devean George, Maurice Ager, two first-round picks and $3 million.
Isn’t this fun? First Gasol, then Shaq, and now Kidd. But this deal wasn’t supposed to happen. Isn’t that right, Mark Cuban?
“For us to make the numbers work in a deal like that, we’d have to trade away half the team,” Cuban told The New York Daily News. “We’re not doing that, so it just doesn’t work. And, we like our team. We’ve got a lot of room for improvement and we hope to get better. But right now, I just don’t see anything happening.”
That’s Cubes, alright, recently reported as saying the above to Mitch Lawrence of the NY Daily News before trading away half his team, a few million dollars, and some draft picks to get Kidd. Is the best owner in professional sports a liar? Or is he just doing his job, like every other exec in the NBA? Probably the latter, but as a fan, I expect more from Cuban than the rest of the bunch.
So, quick analysis: Dallas just got a lot better. They now have a Hall of Fame point guard in Kidd, an All-Star small forward in Josh Howard, and the reigning MVP in Dirk. Add to that a still-solid bench and you’ve got a team that should be in the Western Conference Finals this year…right? It’s hard to tell how things will shake out, with all the movement in the last two weeks, but Dallas suddenly look like they’re going deep into the playoffs again.
Even though nobody cares (people in Jersey don’t even go to watch the Nets play), the Nets have probably improved a great deal because of this trade. They get a solid point guard in Harris (although he’s never going to develop into an All-Star, in my opinion) to play alongside Carter and Jefferson, and a legitimate defensive presence in the middle in Diop. Devean George might be able to contribute (who knows how, but maybe) and Jerry Stackhouse will probably want to be bought out or moved immediately, while Ager probably gets cute without the “e”.
Oh, and what of the All-Star starter-status bestowed upon our dear friend Jason Kidd, you ask? The NBA will make a decision on that one when the trade officially clears, so we won’t know for another day or two. Regardless, I don’t think we’ll be seeing Jason Kidd suit up for the West All-Star team. I think that would be unfair to guys like Baron Davis and Deron Williams, both of whom are more deserving of All-Star status in the West than Kidd (although one could argue that Kidd was voted in, so it’s not a matter of ‘deserving’ anything). This one will be fun because it may set a precedent for future situations involving traded All-Stars.

Wow, I still can’t believe this deal went down. What are the Mavs thinking? I can’t help but think that if the Mavs don’t win a Championship during the next two seasons this could go down as one of the worst trades in the franchises history…

That is a crazy trade. Kidd as much as I love him is on his last legs. I guess it is never too late to go home again.

eeee… I agree with Ryan. They almost won a championship with the team they had, I see no reason why they’d need to “shake things up”. Ya sure, they might have a better chance of winning with Kidd, but looking 3-4 years down the road (or when Kidd retires or greatly declines), this trade will hurt Dallas. On the positive side, this trade makes more sense to me then the Phoenix deal.

This is a very Shaq-Phoenix type of deal, where Dallas knows it’s window is closing so they want to really try and get one this year or next. I’ll have more on this in an article tomorrow.

Dallas aren’t going to win with Dirk in 5 years when Harris might fully develop, so they might as well go for it now with Kidd, who is a far superior point guard.
I like this deal for both teams, simply because they’re both going in different directions: the Nets are rebuilding for Brooklyn and get some cap space this summer and a legit starting PG in Harris. Dallas gets to chase a title this season and probably next season, too.
Surely nobody thought that the Mavs were going to come out of the West after the Lakers got Gasol, the Suns got Shaq, and the Spurs were still better than Dallas anyway. I think one more thing to factor in is that after last season’s loss to the Warriors, Cuban wasn’t comfy going into the playoffs with the same team that lost to an 8th seed.

Uh oh. Curious George holding up the deal.

Devean George… Devean George?… DEVEAN FREAKIN’ GEORGE?
Are you kidding me? Why is it a role player can block such a huge trade? Brutal. If this trade falls apart the NBA needs a new slogan like “Where great trades don’t happen.”

And in other news, Devean George proves himself worthy of holding up a trade, by shooting 0 for 11. In an related note, he has hired 3 bodyguards to follow him around in Dallas.

Dallas should look at trading Devon George and a box of popcorn for Rudy Gay and a first round pick seeing as the Gm over there has no clue on how to run a team.
As for when Kidd comes to Dallas, i dont think it puts them in a way better situation. They gave up a lot to win a championship. And if Dallas does not win within 2 - 3 years, it will be a waste. I still think that will all the moves, Dallas is not even in my top 5 teams. I would still put the following ahead of Dallas for better chances to win a title
San Antonio
Lakers
Boston
Phoenix
New Orleans
I cant wait untill playoffs now though. Just imagine the first round matchups.

I would get more than three if I was him. lol.

He might not be such a villain in Dallas. According to what I read, the hometown fans in Dallas are not very keen on this trade. Many might actually consider George to be something of a hero in this case.

I think Dallas fans are split between two camps on this one. Some will want it to happen, others won’t.
I think you’re right, Brendan. On paper, I think those teams you mentioned are better on paper. However, it’s tough to judge before they play the games. Jason Kidd is a special player, even at his age. I think with him, the Mavs have the chance to beat better teams. We’ll see how things shake out, hopefully soon.
