Born Ready

Just a quick reminder for people to head over to BornReady.TV to check out the latest episodes documenting Lance Stephenson’s senior season. I first found out and posted about these videos a couple weeks ago but after reading Henry’s post on True Hoop about this series it increased my interest. How will a teenager deal with all of these people trying to get a piece of the potential earnings he’ll have? Being a high school kid is tough enough without having to worry about if your friends are legit or if they want some of the money you’ll make when you go pro. His parents seem like nice enough people but after watching these clips there’s a bit of an unsavory aspect I just couldn’t shake. It seems weird to see parents relish in the fact that their kid will be making millions and to see they wait in anticipation of that. I understand the desire to want your kids to be successful but I didn’t get a good vibe while watching these clips about his dad. Iwon’t even tough on his girlfriend and what I perceive her motives to be. One of the few people I’ve seen so far that are geniune and seem to be looking out for Lance is his mom. How sad is it that after watching eight episodes only one person in Lance’s life stands out as authentically looking out for his best intentions?

These clips aren’t the faint of heart. In one scene they show a bloody sneaker while one of Lance’s friends comment about someone being shot out of their sneaker. Being a suburbs kid I can’t relate to this kind of life but it serves to make Lance someone I’ll be rooting for as he strives to leave Coney Island and make a life for himself as an NBA player. After showing the “gritty” parts of Lance’s life the show will then switch and show he he’s also going through “normal” things for a high school kid like learning how to drive. It’s this contract which makes the show riveting and one that I’m quickly getting hooked on.

So far there are eight episodes posted and after spending close to a hour this afternoon watching them I’d highly recommend other basketball fans taking some time to at least check out a couple episodes. To me this was the perfect merger of shows like Survivor and Amazing Race while also getting my hoops fix and watching the year of a high school hoops prodigy. If your anything like me you’ll get caught up in the show and end up watching all eight.
