Interview With VCU Head Coach Anthony Grant
Thanks to 5 Star Hoops I was able to record an interview with Virginia Commonwealth’s head coach Anthony Grant. Coach Grant honed his skills as a key assistant to Billy Donovan at Marshall and Florida in helping to build their programs toward the back-to-back championship and this past season led the VCU Rams to the NCAA tournament and first round knockout of perennial power Duke. Some of the topics we covered in our interview include; Competing in the increasingly tough Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) which put George Mason in the Final Four the year, guard Eric Maynor accepting an invitation to participate in the USA Basketball Men’s Pan American Games Team Trials this summer and what it meant to his program to beat Duke last March in the NCAA Tournament.

the name of the league is the Colonial Athletic Association (CAA)….not the Colonial Conference (or Colonial League or Colonial Federation or any combination of names that media seem to use when mis-naming the conference). One would think that the conference that put a midmajor into the Final Four for the first time since 1979 could at least expect to have its conference name said correctly, at least once in a while.
Doug - I dropped the ball on that, thanks for pointing out my mistake. I had it typed out properly before but on 5StarHoops.com they listed it that way so I just copied and pasted their intro.

As a University of Dayton graduate (Class of 1985), I could not be prouder of the success Anthony has had in the coaching profession. I remember him as a freshman on the 1984 cinderella Flyers team that upset LSU, Oklahoma and Washington before losing to eventual National Champion Georgetown in the West Regional final. I remember him going into his sophomore year expecting to get increased playing time coming off the bench, but when Ed Young tore up his knee that Fall, he stepped into the starting lineup and remained a starter for the remainder of his career at Dayton. Anthony, if you ever read this, I hope you will consider going back to Dayton if the opportunity comes along… even though I know bigger name schools will come calling for you in the not too distant future. Good luck and congratulations on your success at VCU!
