For my latest 5 Star Hoops Podcast I had the chance to chat with Dayton Flyers head coach Brian Gregory. Coach Gregory has been at Dayton for four seasons where he has amassed a record of 65-45. Prior to accepting the head coaching position at Dayton he won a National Championship as an assistant coach at Michigan State.
Some of the topics we covered during our chat include:

Before arriving at Dayton he was an assistant coach at Michigan State. During his last four years at Michigan State, the Spartans won a …

For the past couple of weeks a lot of people are talking about Roko Ukic and his chances of playing in the NBA. I’ll introduce him to those of you who still don’t know this young Croatian player.
Ukic started playing in KK Split and was drafted #45 by the Toronto Raptors in 2005. He signed with TAU Vitoria (in the Spanish ACB league) two seasons ago, and last year he went to FC Barcelona where he’s playing in the ACB Finals right now. He’s a point guard who’s 6′5″, has …

Basketball fans are being inundated with Mock Drafts this week but I’m posting yet another Mock Draft for you to try to digest. Why would I do this? Because I was able to take part in “The Great Blogger Mock Draft 2007″ and I feel this rabid collection of hoop fans know what they are talking about. Jeff from Celtics Blog rounded up a motley crew of basketball bloggers and when things were finished I read through what I found to be one of the better mock drafts circulating around …

Today we watch a low post move. It’s important because it has to do with the development of Tiago Splitter, the young Brazilian pearl.
Splitter started playing as a pro at a very young age and there hasn’t been a more promising player like him in the Spanish leagues until Riki Rubio appeared. Tiago started playing in the Spanish 4th league (semi-professional) at the age of 15, and he has climbed step by step towards the ACB. His game has developed, and the big guy who was known mostly for his impressive blocking …

At the conclusion of every NBA season, the media carnival comes to town, but this county fair has only one ride, the “coaching carousel”.
In the next few weeks, you’ll see Larry Brown, a Van Gundy, and some other guys’ names spinning around, waiting to get scooped up by a team. What you’ll see often however, are teams that sign their “native sons” to coaching commitments (see: Magic and the Lakers, Rudy T and the Rockets, Frank Johnson and the Suns) and the newest example of this is T-NBC’s own Reggie …

Apparently, the CBC decided to reallocate some of their funds from their lost olympics and CFL coverage, and use it in other sports.  Already the home of HNIC, Toronto FC, and a few Jays games, CBC finally figured out that to grow their youth audience, they would need to rely on the biggest youth movement in Canadian sports: Basketball.  No other sport resonates with the “under 25″ crowd as much, and with CBC trying to rebrand itself slightly to increase viewership, I can’t think of a better product for them …

By Ryan McNeill
While reading through Michael Litos book “Cinderella: Inside the Rise of Mid-Major College Basketball” this winter something that stuck out was when he talked about a group called “Villa Seven Consortium.” What is this group and why should you care? Well, the basic premise behind this group is that it allows the athletic directors for mid-major schools like George Washington or VCU to meet with talented assistant coaches during a weekend long conference that has been given the label “Villa Seven Consortium.”
Sounds like another lame business related weekend …

Before Eric Clapton met Jimi Hendrix, he imagined blues musicians to be black men driving long, pink Cadillacs with their guitars in the back. He imagined that they drove from gig to gig on dusty roads always one step ahead of the police and scorned lovers. He imagined that the Cadillacs these black men drove smelled like sex.
Then he saw Jimi Hendrix play and he knew all he imagined was true.
