Interview With Dayton Flyers Head Coach Brian Gregory
For my latest 5 Star Hoops Podcast I had the chance to chat with Dayton Flyers head coach Brian Gregory. Coach Gregory has been at Dayton for four seasons where he has amassed a record of 65-45. Prior to accepting the head coaching position at Dayton he won a National Championship as an assistant coach at Michigan State.
Some of the topics we covered during our chat include:
- Before arriving at Dayton he was an assistant coach at Michigan State. During his last four years at Michigan State, the Spartans won a national championship, had two Final Four appearances, three Elite Eight appearances, four NCAA bids, two Big Ten Championships, four players drafted in the first round of the NBA draft, and MSU signed six McDonald’s All-Americans. Coach Gregory talks about some of his fondest memories of his time at Michigan State
- He discussed some of the things he learned from Tom Izzo while he was at Michigan State and Kevin O’Neill while he was at Northwestern
- He has former Raptors assistant coach Bob Beyer on his coaching staff and he talked about how having a coach that has experience coaching in the NBA has been an asset to him and his program
- Last Fall during Labor Day weekend I had the pleasure of meeting Coach Gregory and watching one of his practices when he brought his team to Toronto for a summer tournament. He talked with me about some of the benefits of playing against Canadian colleges in exhibition matches
- Playing in the Atlantic 10 provides Dayton with a high level of competition. Coach Gregory explains what teams like Dayton need to do to get respect and improve their power ratings for tournament bids
- The Atlantic 10 has sent a few teams to the Final Four recently (St. Joseph’s) while others including U Massachusetts have marched deep into the tournament. Coach Gregory provided his insight into what the Atlantic 10 Conference do to put more teams into the NCAA tournament
