Thirst is nothing, image is everything? :)

You made quite a few great points about the situation. There's this problem when the NBA tries to create both a "great rivalry" between two teams, and then also tries to keep all their players in a "clean cut" mode. This kind of double-think is essential in this NBA. Players, especially from a lot of "old school" fans, should be tough, gritty and play hard, yet Stern is consistently trying to remove the "thug" and "urban" image from the NBA. It all kinda culminates in this incident, or series of incidents.

On the one hand, the Spurs have been portrayed as these great, fundamental guys, who love the Suns (according to the ABC broadcasts anyways) and who are friendly and approachable. On the other hand, you've had a few incidents involving Bowen, Horry, Diaw, Stoudamire, Nash and Bell. It's pretty interesting, I think, that with San Antonio's 2nd-tier star players, they managed to draw out the Suns #1 star players.

Nash said at the beginning of the series that he was concerned that his team wouldn't be disciplined enough to take on the Spurs. I guess in the end, his concerns were correct.
