Hey guys, I just found this article on yahoo sports:

http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news?slug=afp-basketchnnbadraftyi&prov=afp&type=lgns

"Along with Yi, seen as the best player to come out of China since Houston Rockets center Yao, Chinese point guard Sun Yue has also announced he will enter the draft."

I'm really pulling for this guy too, he hits me as a Luke Walton type player with a couple of tradeoffs (he lacks Walton's shooting proficiency, but has the body and athleticism to be a better defender and slasher if he can gain strength).

Looks like Sun will be in Orlando afterall - he’s on <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2085" rel="nofollow">the camp roster</a>. Keep an eye on <a href="http://www.nbadraft.net/2007predraftcamp002.asp" rel="nofollow">#41 on Team 2</a>.
Jox - No one (other than insiders) know for sure whether or not Sun is working on his shot 24/7. Since he’s slated to be in Orlando, I would think he’s interested in making it to the NBA. Therefore, I’d assume he is working on his shot.

I don't know why Sun isn't working on his shooting 24/7 - his Achille's Heel?

Thanks again for your comments, Eric. I guess only time will tell if Sun will make it as an unconventional NBA SG/SF.

Update: Sun Yue is back in the NBADraft.net mock - #60.

Jeff W,

Statistics are not the tell-tale of ability yet have relevance. Chris Webber has nearly a career average of a double double and has been very good yet not dominant. My view is again the technique and skill traits that translate into an effective NBA player. When you re-read my initial post to your recent response you will see that NBA point guards can perform the skill traits required for the position more effieciently than Sun.

The prerogative to determine "pass first point guards" over point guards overall talents creates a dogma that is endless and categorizes an analysis of every individual skill. Yet, there is no refutation of Sun's poor shooting skills, stamina, strength, and ball-handling capabilities commensurate to NBA point guards.

Keep in mind the view here is where Sun is at this point of his career. Your passion for Sun is respected. Peace...

Thanks again for the feedback, Eric.

It sure looked dominant, though, when Sun was posting double-doubles and near-triple-doubles, albeit not on a regular basis. Plus, I think court vision and unselfishness (which are Sun's strengths) are en vogue and in demand right now, so I figure that there might be some interest in Sun.

Update: Sun Yue has slipped out of NBADraft.net's mock. And here's a link to <a href="http://www.draftexpress.com/viewprofile.php?p=1024" rel="nofollow">his profile on Draft Express</a>.

OT: Eric, do you think that PG is a "talented decadent position in the NBA"? Certainly not pass-first PGs, and I'd even debate PGs in general. I would agree with you, though, regarding wings (SG and SF), even PFs.

Jeff....To play backcourt in the NBA one must be able to finish and control/maintain the dribble with either hand while being pressured by ball-hawkung guards at the NBA level as a basic skill trait. Tall point guards like the incomparable Magic Johnson could control the rock at full speed with either hand. Watch the NBA playoffs and how most point guards and ball=handling wing men in the face of defense provide flexible ambidexterity to "free-up"...

>>

As far as stamina and strength being fixable those are attributes that need to show signs of being "fixed". Sun has not shown enough game for with his style of play and the operative word analysis "at this time of his development". Sun has played well in the ABA yet has not dominated...The most talent decadent position in the NBA are wing players and point guards and simply put Sun right now does not grade out at a middle level incomparably speaking.

Good point, Eric, re player objectives. What, then, is an ABA player's objective? And does that take away from the opinion that the ABA is more competitive than the CBA?

The CBA is still able to produce talent, however sparse it is. Can't an atypical ABA player (which can define most players on the transplanted Beijing Aoshen) make it, if his goal is the NBA?

In my research, I didn't found mention of hand dexterity problems. However, if Sun were to play NBA SG/SF instead of PG, wouldn't that problem be minimized? Same goes for ball-handling. Stamina and strength are fixable.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not expecting Sun to be an NBA star or even to be drafted. I just think that he would be useful with the right team and with some work.

The goal of ALL D-League players is to make the NBA...Some NBDL players take less money for the chance to be called up to the "League" during the season and also to be seen regulary by each team's NBA scouts who in some cases exclusively cover the D-League.

>>>

Other players head out the states to Europe for more money and there are cases where player's skip NBA camp;a NBA roster spot altogether to play professionally in Europe.

Therefore the NBDL and ABA are light years different in regards to objectives and player pursuits. Furthermore, Sun Yue would be hard pressed to get off a consistent shot in the NBA with his current offensive game. Sun's ball handling skills, stamina, strength, and questionable hand dexterity would be highly exposed in the NBA style. Sun is on very few NBA radars at this point of his development.
