I couldn't agree more Tom. In regard to his competition, he brings a few different things than those players you mentioned. Bonzi is more of an undersized three, Snyder is not a great outside shooter, and Luther Head and the newly re-aquired Mike James are undersized to play the two. While all these players are very good players, Brad brings a different skill set with his shooting and hustle. I assume this is why the Rockets drafted him and being an Aussie, I REALLY would love to see him make the roster and get some serious burn. If he approaches the summer league with the same confidence that he approached the NBL as a rookie, he has a legitimate shot to make their roster. Would love to see him as that spark player you just mentioned and I think he would play the role well (similar to his rookie season in the NBL where he won sixth man of the year and rookie of the year in his first season).

Just a quick update - Newley has been drafted by Houston in the second round of the 2007 NBA Draft. If the Rockets want him this year, he has a clause allowing for immediate release and can join them in America within the next few weeks.

If Newley does land on the final roster for next season, he will be backing up Battier and McGrady while fighting Bonzi Wells, Kirk Snyder and Luther Head for minutes. He probably won't see a lot of court time if that is the case (although there are rumours about Battier heading to Portland), but just training and working with an NBA franchise will improve Newley to a great extent and he could certainly become a nice spark player off the Houston bench in the years to come.

Wow! Time to eat humble pie. He just got drafted 24th in the second round by houston. Hopefully it works out. Congrats! I hope he doesn't go to waste sitting on the bench though.

Brad is a great Australian player....unfortunately this will not translate into the NBA. This is a different league altogether. He has great numbers in our league and will continue to post great stats, no doubt. I have played in the American College system for 4 years, and in terms of athletic ability, he would be average..if that! due to his lack of upper body (and overall) strength. His defense is non existant. If you watch any NBL games, you have to concede that the league as a whole (except maybe Brisbane) has horrible defense. You sometimes just sit there saying to yourself "how did they let him get that layup!?!" It is very soft in that area compared to other leagues. it would be a shame for him to possibly sit on the end of a bench, or suit up only when a player is placed on the injured list, for the next several years. I think europe would be the better place for him to develop. After a few years there, then maybe the NBA

There is no doubt that Brad Newley is ready for the step up to the NBA. He was wise to wait last draft, and although the depth of this draft is impressive I believe a team like Detroit or Toronto who will be picking low in the second round would be well served to acquire his services. I also played against Brad at a Junior state level and his talent was exceptional then, even if he was "wreaking with attitude". However, contrary to earlier comments I believe this is a good thing as confidence is a necessity if you want to crack it in a league where failure is so common plus he's had Ian Stacker (his coach in Australia) behind him leading his maturation into what I can only predict is a smart intuitive man and player.

Brad Newley has amazing talent and when his on his game he can be very hard to defend. I remember one game where he single handly led his side Townsville to victory after his 50 point performace.
Hopefully he will get drafted as Newley is still developing as a player.

Also found another brief player profile about his career ; http://www.aussiebball.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=115

Not quite up to NBA standards I don´t think. I have played against brad at a more junior level and while he his a dominant player with untold potential i think he would be best served by a few years in europe. I also believe there may be an attitude problem. To pick him early in the second round would be a waste and i believe he would be best picked up as a free agent.
