To Unknown, the NBA has a long history of players going straight from High School to the pros with success.

The real problem with College Ball is it doesn't really prepare the players for NBA ball. You read the draft reports of players from one year to the next (like Noah), and they have the exact same weaknesses year to year. They are just physically growing, not actually learning how to play the game. Nor learning how to grow up as well (college players are more likely to get in trouble with the law than the HS players).

A successful college coach is 85% recruiting and 15% keeping your players in the game.

The NBA is caught in a bind, the NCAA provides free hype and players will have a ready made fanbase. The Florida, Ohio State, Texas fans will follow their players to the next level. And NBA fans will have a better idea of who their team drafted. But the players are playing a different game, it would be much, much better for them to be treated like professionals and trained by professionals.

I think that's Stern's ultimate goal with the Asian Market, turn it into a minor league. There will be enough revenues to support the players and training, there will have a worldwide fanbase coming into the US and the games can be aired in the mornings as a lead in before the Saturday afternoon game.

yes, lets feel sorry for the people who cant tie their shoes...please help my student who cant get a 700 on the SAT. Are you freakin kidding me? give me the SAT test for 5 minutes and i could get a 700. let the kids who cant get that go on to do what the people w/out education have done for thousands of years before there were pro sports and multi-million dollar contracts--manual labor. everyone here is complaining about the nba not allowing kids to enter the nba directly out of high school, forcing them to go to one year of college, but the rule actually states that the player must be one year removed from high school, it doesnt say they have to go to college! what about the NFL? you have to be at least 3 years removed from your high school graduation to enter the NFL draft, and yet no one is complaining to the NFL about unfair policies! if you want to skip college, play a sport that allows you to jump from high school to the pros like baseball or hockey and stop bitchin about unfair policies and "failed" education systems.

Grover: I like the idea of strengthening the minor leagues but I still feel that teens should have the choice. If I had a player or son thinking about jumping straight to the NBA I would encourage them to head to college for a bit, however, over the past couple of months I've come the realization that some kids just won't have the grades to go to college. What happens to them when they don't have the grades to play college hoops but the NBA is preventing them from inking a pro contract? I agree that forming a minor league system like MLB has is the best idea however I still feel that the NBA should allow players to declare for the Draft straight out of high school (like MLB and the NHL allow). To me it's all about choice and I feel that the NBA is wrong by taking away that choice from teens.

The part that really burns me is that the NDBL does NOT have an age limit... so Stern is willing to pay teens peanuts to pay in this developmental league without having to pay them under the rookie salary scale... it's sketchy!

You said, "There are going to be some gifted high school basketball players who just aren’t cut out for college athletics."

Wouldn't this be a perfect reason to strengthen the minor league association with the NBA?

Look at Major League Baseball - several divisions of play, with pay scales to match. Teams are affiiliated with MLB teams all the way down. The pay is not great at all levels, but at least you are getting paid to play (and learn) your sport of choice.

So, work to improve the quality of the NBDL, ABA, Euro Leagues, etc. and turn them into a true feeder system that parallels the college system.

Surely this is a better idea than letting talented players fall by the wayside when their one unrealistic hope(NBA draft) fails them.

P.S. Does the NBDL also have the age limit? The ABA? Clearly the Euro Leagues don't - just look at Darko :)
