As a lifelong Celts fan I would love to see the arena named after Arnold. Unfortunately, the Celtics are only tenants. The building (like the old Garden) is owned by Delaware North, the owners of the Bruins.

another great post, thanks Brian!

Like you a pet peeve of mine is when buildings are now named after corporations. With all the money these teams make you'd think that they could "afford" to honour someone associated with their team by naming their stadium after that person. What do you think the chances are of the Celtics naming their arena in honour of Red and saying no to $30 million? On the flip side, do you think any corporations will spend money and let Red's name go up instead of theirs? I would think that any business based out of the Boston area that did this would get a TON of great PR for this kind of move.

In regards to old stadiums there's a smell that just gives you shivers as a fan. Growing up in Toronto an old arena that gave me shivers was Maple Leaf Gardens. Some fans would say that it smelled like sewage but as a kid I loved that smell because it was a mixture of sweat from hockey games and countless years of the circus coming through town. With the Garden that old smell of Red's cigars would have permeated the building as well other kinds of "priceless" smells and things that go into making the atmosphere at a basketball game.
